Project Classic Living Reveal {The Foyer}

April 19, 2016 by Amber Filed Under: #projectclassicliving, amber b design, design, foyer, interior design, local clients

I am excited to show the second room from Project Classic Living… The Foyer! At some point, I will make sure to show before and after pictures of every room. But I’m just too excited to get to the afters. ๐Ÿ™‚ My clients had a chest of drawers and mirror that were no longer their style. They were looking to freshen things up and have the room styles flow together as one. Here is the completed foyer, all photographed again by the very talented Sarah Heppell Photography. And of course, there’s a little blue to tie every space together!

Project Classic Living Reveal {The Living Room}

April 18, 2016 by Amber Filed Under: #projectclassicliving, amber b design, design, interior design, local clients

I am thrilled to be here today, to reveal the after photos of Project Classic Living! My clients and I have been working together for over a year and a half. We started on the nursery and have moved from there to the living room, foyer, kitchen, dining room and bathroom. Today, I will be revealing the living room. This is a very long space, at about 25 feet in length. We optimized comfy seating with a sectional and also separated the room into two seating zones. When my clients have guests over, the chairs can be moved around to accommodate about 9, comfortably! I hope you like a lot of pictures, because there were too many great ones not to share. And I owe that to my photographer extraordinaire, Sarah Heppell. It was a very cloudy day and she was able to make it look like a sun filled day! Here we go…

I can’t thank Sarah enough for her fantastic photography skills in making this room shine! I am so happy with the way this project has turned out. In time, the space behind the leather chair will be a built in window seat with pretty pillows and window treatments. The window treatments here are done by Windows by Melissa and the fabric was from Tonic Living. I love how light and bright this room feels. Thank you for taking a peek into this project! Make sure to check back all week for more reveals! Up tomorrow… the foyer!

Why This Works & Bridge Street Segment

February 24, 2016 by Amber Filed Under: #projectvintagegem, amber b design, design, interior design, local clients, personal design style, why works series

Welcome back to another installment of Why This Works… a weekly series where I show a designed space and dissect the details, to explain why the designer chose what he/she chose and why it works! Today’s space is a project I designed last year for a local client. I speak about it often on this blog, because it was such a fun project to work on. This project is also near and dear because I love the true talent that shines through in Sarah Heppell’s photography skills! She truly made this space shine with these after photos. As you may already know, I named this project Vintage Gem, because of the gorgeous architecture of the apartment and the details they left in tact during the renovation of the building. Also, my client loves a mix of vintage and new, so the name was a great fit. In past blog posts, I never truly dissected the details of this space and explained why certain pieces were chosen and why. So let’s do that here, today!

Amber B Design, Photos by Sarah Heppell

When I walked into this space for the first time, I was immediately struck with the gorgeous brick walls and stunning high ceilings. It is a compact space with a combined living and ding area, but the high ceilings and architectural details make up for that. I wanted to compliment those details and not compete, by selecting light and neutral furnishings that allowed the apartment’s details to be the main focal point. The furniture and accessories were the supporting cast. Another trick I like to use is to select a few large, oversized accessories, as opposed to several small pieces. It’s a great visual trick that allows your eye to be drawn up to appreciate the room, giving the illusion of more square footage. When I installed the large blue table lamps and floral art work on the buffet, your eye was brought up instead of down and the space appeared larger. You could admire the brick more, even though we added pieces in front of it. Also, the dramatic wall clock was added behind the sectional. Upon first glance, it’s massive size could appear too large for some. But this clock instantly pushed the walls back and made the room feel bigger. I like to tell clients that if an accessory piece appears too big, it’s probably just right. It can take time to train your eye to like larger accessories. Luckily, my client was right on board and also thought the space felt bigger. In this room, I also wanted to use a mix of different wood stains and metal finishes. Especially with this vintage style, our goal was to create a space that looked as if it had been collected over time and not to match too much. So, the light stained buffet is near the dark stained dining table. Brass candle sticks on the buffet are near a bronze side table and pewter base coffee table. My trick for mixing metals, is to stay within the same ‘shine’ family. In this room, I wouldn’t have brought in a shiny chrome. All of the metals are buffed and matte, which is why they can work together. I like to separate the mattes from the shiny. And last but not least, I like to add various textures and fabrics into a space to create a layered depth. The jute, natural fiber area rug is paired with a leather chair, linen sofa and cotton pillow covers. That will add layers and depth to a space, making it feel warm and collected.

So that’s a little sneak peek into why I chose what I did for this space! I was thrilled to be able to talk about this design today with Sistina Giordano from Bridge Street. She is always wonderful to chat with and it was a fun segment. To see the video clip, visit HERE!! Thank you so much to Sistina and the entire News Channel 9 team for having me!

Progress over at Project Classic Living

January 5, 2016 by Amber Filed Under: #projectclassicliving, amber b design, central new york design, design class, local clients

Earlier this week, I stopped over at Project Classic Living to check on some amazing progress that has been made and to add some final accessories. You can also continue to check on the progress on instagram, @amberbdesign and search the hash tag #projectclassicliving

You’ll have to excuse these grainy i phone pictures. I hope to get on Sarah’s schedule soon, for a photography session! In the foyer, the sunburst mirrors have been added to the gallery wall going up the stairs, completing that portion of the space.

A staircase with many pictures on the wall

mirrors, oversized frames

A driftwood sphere was added to the entry table and a blue tray was relocated from the living room, to add a layering effect.

A table with a lamp and mirror in front of it

The living room has the new drapes and hardware up! I love the greek key fabric and how it finishes off the room.

A table with a lamp and mirror in front of it

drapery fabric, chairs, rug, wall art

I love using petite tables in living rooms, as they are easy to move around, when needed. The small marble top table next to the leather recliner {yes, that’s a recliner!} can easily be relocated to the sectional or gray club chairs at the back of the room. Versatile design is important to me when decorating spaces.

A table with a lamp and mirror in front of it

There is still some styling pieces to be added to the coffee table, but besides that, the room is complete!

A staircase with many pictures on the wall

We will work on the sun room through the french doors, next. All of the wood paneling is being painted, from crown molding to baseboards with a deeply saturated navy blue! There are subtle touches of blue throughout this space and their home, so it will be the crown jewel to finish off the first floor. You may remember that last year, we finished the kitchen eating area, where you see lots of that gorgeous blue…

A dining room table with chairs and a bench

In the dining room, I can’t get enough of the pink ceiling! It adds that warmth and the space just glows under the soft chandelier light, in the evening.

A table with a lamp and mirror in front of it

To bring those white porcelain pieces front and center, we had the back of the built ins painted a dark color. Now, the accessories really pop.

I hope you enjoyed a little glimpse into the project! Stay updated with all things Amber B Design on instagram! {@amberbdesign}

A Look Back at 2015

January 1, 2016 by Amber Filed Under: #projectvintagegem, amber b design, Bridge Street, central new york design, design, e-decorating, e-design, local clients

Before I head out to begin 2016, I wanted to look back at the fun, exciting and adventurous year that was 2015. Why not look back and evaluate the past, so you can move forward to better the future?!? So please don’t mind my little self indulgence, while I reflect on the highlights from this past year. ๐Ÿ™‚

I completed Project Vintage Gem… one of the coolest projects I was able to be a part of and one of the most amazing design experiences to date!

I took the plunge and had my web site redesigned and rebranded! That was one of best decisions I have made for this little business. I feel that this new design truly reflects me and where I want to go with Amber B Design. Britt Douglas knocked it out of the park and gave me a web presence that I could have never dreamed of!

A website for an interior design company

To better enhance the new web site, I enlisted the help of talented local Photographer, Sarah Heppell, to photograph our home and take some head shots. Sarah is such a true talent and I can’t wait to work with her again in the new year!

And just last month, I was able to make my live TV debut on Syracuse’s Bridge Street, to discuss simple ways to jazz up your home this holiday season!

All of these fun experiences would not have been possible without my wonderful family with me, every step of the way! They are my everything and I am so thankful for their support. Here’s to a wonderful 2016 with them by my side! Also, a big thank you to all of you, for your readership and for the positive feedback you always give. You’re the best! Thank you for letting me indulge a bit in this past year’s memories. This blog is a bit of a journal for me and it helps to reflect, before I move ahead into the future. Amber B Design has some fun projects in store for the new year and I am excited to share them all with you, here!

Have a Happy, Healthy New Year and I hope to see you back here soon!

New Local Design #projectbedroomrefresh

October 9, 2015 by Amber Filed Under: #projectbedroomrefresh, amber b design, ballarddesigns, design, local clients, personal design style

Happy Friday!! I am excited to share with you a new project that I am working on. I have called this one #projectbedroomrefresh. If you follow along on instagram {AmberBDesign}, then you will also see sneak peeks of the project there! I met my new clients about a month ago, when they contacted me to help with the upstairs bedrooms. The rooms have not had any design attention for some time and they wanted them to feel stylish, updated and most importantly, complete for their guests. I proposed bedding, window treatments and accessory options. We are also working on their master bedroom and giving that space a complete overhaul. They will be keeping the bed, dresser and night stands, but everything else will be transformed in their room. I am excited to see it all come together. Below are my ideas for the two guest rooms and the master bedroom…

A picture of some materials and instructions for making curtains.

This is the design plan for the guest bedroom in the back of the house. The tone on tone leaf patterned fabric will be the drapes! The bedding will stay soft and crisp, while color will come in through the throw pillows. The herringbone rug in the back of the design layout, will be the new hallway stair runner. I just love how that pattern will look as you walk up the stairs.

A table with some fabric samples and a plan

The above design is for the other guest room. My clients love a traditional design aesthetic, so when I found this plaid fabric from Tonic Living, I knew they would love it! I will then balance that traditional with some modern, which also happens to be a favorite style of mine. I am thrilled that my clients are on board with that mix up. I think it will bring so much depth and interest to the rooms. The drapes will be in the neutral, Greek key fabric, also from Tonic Living. I have used this fabric in another client’s home and it is a stunning print for curtains!

A table with some furniture and fabric samples

And last but not least, is the master bedroom. This is a rather large room, so we luckily have space for a small seating area. We will add pattern and color to this room with the four inch buffalo check fabric for the drapes. I am so excited for that one!! With two windows in the room, there will be four panels in this gorgeous, on trend but traditional print. We will modernize that classic buffalo check with some CWD pillows and a stunning Ming dragon lumbar pillow. And it wouldn’t be an Amber B Design project without a little antique brass thrown into the mix! Each space has a little touch of brass to give it that collected over time style. When my clients renovated their kitchen a while back, they ended up using a couple of different metal finishes. I told them they were on trend, without even realizing it!

If you have read my blog for a while, you may notice that these presentations look different than past design presentations of mine. I have decided to go in a different direction, with how I show my clients the ideas. I used to present with large boards, where the images were smaller, but fit all in one place. Now, I have larger swatches of fabric, paired with smaller presentation papers. I now show vignettes and group them by sections of the room. I am really pleased with the new format and believe it will be easier to organize for both myself and my clients. With any business, self reflection and constant editing are important. I was talking with a good design friend of mine and her advice is always invaluable to me. I know with my own business, I am constantly looking and reevaluating to see what works best. So far, I am happy with this new change!

I look forward to updating you on this project as it moves along. And to follow along more often, you can check in on instagram {AmberBDesign} Have a great weekend!!

{Partial} Reveal of #projectvintagegem !!

May 8, 2015 by Amber Filed Under: #projectvintagegem, amber b design, central new york design, interior design, local clients

I am so excited to share this partial reveal of #projectvintagegem today!! I went to my client’s house earlier this week, to bring a carload full of accessories and items to style the place up. We are still waiting on a few key pieces before we call this project complete, but I had to share the amazing progress we made. It is always fun to look back at where the project began, so we can see just how much was accomplished so far. You can follow along from the beginning with the link #projectvintagegem or click HERE to see more of the back story of the apartment. Here are the dining and living rooms when I first visited her loft style apartment…

Before

And here is the progress so far…

Progress

Excuse the grainy phone pictures! I promise better quality reveal photos when the project is complete! The buffet zone holds so many of her dishes, which was important with the tight cabinet space in the kitchen. Since we were not able to drill into the brick, I proposed we lean this oversized print on the buffet to ground the zone. I love the juxtaposition of this art with the lamps. The brass candlesticks were an antique find. I love the collected over time feel they bring to the space, even without candles inside. They add a sculptural punch on their own.

To the right of the buffet is the eating area. The new custom banquette has become a favorite spot for my client to sit. The plaid rug is everything in this space. Once the sofa and club chair arrive, you will be able to see the room as a whole and fully appreciate the power of this patterned rug.

This gorgeous console will go behind the sofa, once it arrives. If you follow me on instagram {amberbdesign}, you may have already seen these beautiful blue and white urns I found at Home Goods. This was the project I bought them for!! The small iron and marble table will go next to the leather club chair, once that arrives.

Above, is a little sneak peek of the hallway leading to the foyer. I love the oversized blue map art near the rustic brick!

For the master bedroom, we went for a calm, serene vibe.

Before

The only thing that stayed in the bedroom was the bed. This is a fun transformation, getting to see the design board ideas come to life!

Progress

I hope my client enjoys relaxing in this space! We are still waiting on some items to arrive in here, such as: the dresser mirror, ottoman and side table for the arm chair and bed sconces. I also need to get back over there and finish steaming those linens! I cringe when I see the wrinkled duvet, but I will fix all that. ๐Ÿ™‚ We have come so far, starting with just the bed.

I hope you have enjoyed the partial reveal of #projectvintagegem !! More pictures to come… I promise!

An Update on #projectclassickitchen !!

March 4, 2015 by Amber Filed Under: #projectclassickitchen, amber b design, before and after, design, interior design, kitchen, local clients

I am sorry for the long absence on the blog! Time got away from me, but I am happy to return with a local client project update. You may have remembered a post I wrote HERE about #projectclassickitchen. It was a local client project that I was so thrilled to be a part of. The project got its name because my clients contacted me after remodeling their gorgeous traditional and classic kitchen. They live in a 1930’s Georgian brick colonial and the finishes they chose totally work with the era of the home. I was hired to complete the space with: breakfast nook furnishings, wall accessories and window treatments. I recently went over to the house, since we are working on some other rooms on the first floor and decided to snap even more pictures of the kitchen. When I was there last, the drapes had not arrived yet and there were some other items that needed to be hung on the walls. Here is the space now…

And just for fun, let’s do a before and after of the breakfast nook…

After

I can’t wait to show you the design process for the rest of the rooms we are working on!

The Design Plans for #projectvintagegem

February 4, 2015 by Amber Filed Under: #projectvintagegem, design, interior design, local clients

I am excited to show you the design plans for #projectvintagegem. My client is very happy with the ideas and ordering items has already begun! With this project, we are working on her foyer, living/dining room and master bedroom. To recap, my client is looking for a home that has a vintage, collected style. She loves mixing woods with metals for an industrial look, which is a perfect style for her historic building with exposed brick walls. Here are the plans, via Amber B Design style…

The Foyer

The Living Room

The Dining Room

The Master Bedroom

I am so excited to see this project through to completion! It has been my pleasure coming up with these design plans and I just love the charm and character of this building. I promise to report the progress along the way!

If you would like to work together, either locally or through e-design, I have openings beginning in April!

What is Happening Around Here…

January 23, 2015 by Amber Filed Under: #projectvintagegem, blog, design, design services, e-decorating, e-design, local clients

Sorry for the lack of posts as of late! I have been happily plugging away on some design projects that I can’t wait to share with you! There is something about this time of year that is so optimistic. The Holiday decorations have been put away, routines are back again and I feel energized to get more accomplished. That’s a great feeling, isn’t it?!? This is always the time of year I start to organize and make changes, both in the decor of my home and in business. If you have stuck around here for quite some time {thanks Mom!}, you may realize that I have had more business name changes than Puff Daddy. Well, maybe it’s the same number of changes. Let’s count… First, there was Puff Daddy, then Puffy, then P Diddy and now- just Diddy. Ok, so he has had four. He does have me beat by one. I went from Simple Dwellings Interiors, to Amber B Interiors and now officially… Amber B Design! I have always wanted to use the name Design for the business. It’s not a big change from Amber B Interiors, but it makes me happy. The links on my sidebar might be broken for a bit, but should be up and running soon. I think I might keep the blog name as Simple Dwellings, since that name does have a special place in my heart and has been around since the beginning. But all of my social media accounts {for the most part} have changed to Amber B Design.

Great, now that’s out of the way… let’s talk design projects. I am currently working on a local design project that I refer to as #projectvintagegem. The apartments in this building have such character and charm. My client has just moved into this apartment, hence the boxes.

Before

Oh, my client’s precious cat!! I am also working on my first commercial project, which is a wine tasting room that is part of their production facility. Here is some inspiration to show you the direction we are headed with that…

It has been a real challenge to push my creativity further with this commercial project. But, I have learned so much and am grateful to have that opportunity to bring myself out of that comfort zone.
In March, I am ecstatic to be working again with a wonderful client. Room by room, she is renovating her 1930’s Georgian Brick colonial. We first completed her daughter’s sweet, delicate nursery…

more on the nursery here
And then we moved onto her eating area in the kitchen…

more on the kitchen here
There is still a full reveal coming soon, since this spot in the kitchen is only about 90% complete. One of the rooms we will be tackling in March is their sun room. Currently, the walls, windows and all trim are wood stained. That look won’t stay that way for long. Here is my inspiration for that space…
via

via
Deep blue walls were made for her space! For some reason, when a design idea hits me that I know will work so well, I just want to sing in an operatic voice. Is that just me?!? Probably should have kept that one to myself. Needless to say, I can’t wait to show you that reveal.
Thanks for checking back in!
