Would You Ever Give E-Design A Try??

March 26, 2012 by Amber Filed Under: e-design

I have been thinking about this lately and was curious on your thoughts… have you ever tried/thought about using e-design? I started my own e-design business last year and have loved it so far! Every design and room is a unique challenge- like solving a puzzle. It consumes me (in a good way) until the project is complete. For me, there’s nothing like it!

One of my first design boards for a client.
I have yet to delve into the design world locally and plan to in the future. For now, this is a perfect fit!
But this question isn’t just for potential clients. If you are already an interior designer, decorator, e-decorator… would you also give e-design a try as a client? I would! I have often wondered what some of my favorite e-design bloggers would do with a room in my home. If I told them my wishes, ideas and style- would they give me a totally different interpretation of what I was thinking? Maybe! Would they think of a layout I never thought of, colors I would have been afraid to try in my own home? Would they push me a little and get me to think outside my comfort zone? Probably!

No matter what your design background is, I think it’s always useful to have outside opinions on your own space. It’s that second set of eyes that can tell you what you didn’t think about! Some may say that a negative to e-design is that the decorator is not able to see the space in person. I understand that criticism. On the other hand, it’s an extremely affordable way to work with an interior decorator and get their view/outlook of your space. With the amazing internet, seeing multiple photos of the space, constant dialouge between client/decorator- you truly feel as if you are there in the space. I also love seeing the client take the design and run with it! They tweak it a bit and put their own spin on the decorator’s ideas. It’s a great partnership.

I would love to hear your thoughts! Have you tried it? Would you???

Pull Up A Seat!

March 5, 2012 by Amber Filed Under: design, e-design

How do you like your seating around the dining table? My style in general is eclectic, so I like to mix up seating styles. For a rectangular table, I love the look of flanking the heads of the table with wing back chairs, while keeping the side chairs more simple. In a past e-design project, I proposed that look:

I proposed using the Willoughby Dining chairs from West Elm only on the ends, while keeping the side chairs different and simple. Mixing the seating, while also mixing modern with traditional gives the space a more collected over time look.

If the area permits, I also love the look of a settee or a built in banquette. Our home doesn’t have space for built ins around the table, but I would love to try a settee on one side of the table! The look invites you to linger and chat for hours in a comfortable way! Here are some great seating options for your Monday morning. Enjoy!

Using Bedroom Dressers as Sideboards

September 5, 2011 by Amber Filed Under: bedroom dresser, e-design, sideboard

When putting a design together, it’s fun to use furniture pieces in unconventional ways. A designated “bedroom dresser” does not always have to be placed in the bedroom. My most recent e-design client was looking for a dining room transformation. As I was searching for new sideboards, I came across this elegant mirrored piece that was labeled “bedroom dresser.”

When I went to the store to see it in person, I loved the scale of the piece and the soft velvety interior lining that was inside all of the drawers. I thought this furniture piece was a great addition to her modern, traditional dining room! The fact that it’s mirrored gives the dining room an extra bit of glam and elegance. As I was searching for mirrored sideboards, I was surpised to see the hefty price tags! This dresser is very close in scale and style to the others, but at half the price. I know I have showed this before on the blog, but here is the complete design one more time:

Mixing finishes in a room helps to give the space an eclectic, lived in look. The height and width of most bedroom dressers would work beautifully as dining room sideboards and might also be the less expensive option! I have recently come across another great blogger who has a “bedroom dresser” in his dining room. Thrifter extraordinaire Mr. Goodwill Hunting was on the Nate Berkus show giving a tour of his budget savvy home, including his dining room. Stop by here to check it out!

Choosing Fabrics for Your Space

August 16, 2011 by Amber Filed Under: e-design, fabric

Fabric selection for a room can be tricky… there are so many amazing fabrics out there to choose from, that the task can appear daunting! What I like to do is choose a fabric that has all of the colors in the space, to help tie the room together. Tieing your room’s colors together with fabric allows for the space to have an array of color choices, while also incorporating hues from other rooms, bring multiple spaces together. I recently wrapped up a dining room e-design project, where we went through the process of choosing from multiple fabric selections. I presented the selections to the client with this board:

All of these fabrics can be found here. The client ended up choosing the whimsical bird fabric on the top middle row. It was also my favorite on the board. It’s a Waverly fabric, and we are using it to cover a canvas for art on the wall. When I started to look for fabrics for the art, I wanted to make sure and use all of the room’s colors to bring the space together. The canvas art was the client’s idea, and I loved it! What I love best about e-design is the meeting of the minds and the building of the decorator/client partnership. The client lives in the space and knows it best. When the partnership works well together, we can bounce ideas off each other and design magic happens! This Waverly fabric ties all of the room’s colors together, giving the space a cohesive, thoughtful look. To read more about this design and see the complete design board, go here.

A Dining Room E-Design

August 11, 2011 by Amber Filed Under: e-design

I just recently wrapped up a dining room e-design project. This was so fun to work on, because the homeowner was amazing to work with. The client was looking for a modern, classic design with a touch of elegance. Yay- one of my favorites!! She liked using grays and blues and also loves dark wood furnishings. Here is the board I came up with:

This space will have shades of blue and gray, with pops of yellow! I tried to achieve a modern classic look with a blend of traditional and modern pieces, elegant mirrored finishes and upholstered seating. She loved the design, and I am so excited for her! My favorite elements in this space are the mirrored buffet and damask stenciled wall. The buffet is actually sold as a bedroom dresser, yet had all the right dimensions and even had soft interior lining in all of the drawers! The damask stencil will be applied to one wall and be the showstopper when you enter the room. The entire experience was great for me, because we made such a great team. It was truly fun!
